Exploring and Dining in Puglia with Kids

Alberobello, Puglia Italy
From our base at the Villa Carenza, families attending Arte al Sole have an opportunity to enjoy not only the charming seaside town of Monopoli, but also to explore neighboring towns such as the white-washed Ostuni, which is beautiful at sunset as it is perched on a hill overlooking the sea. Alberobello is – a must see UNESCO world heritage site where the infamous trulli are clustered together. Polignano a Mare – a short ride from Monopoli, is a historic town is perched on a cliff with breathtaking views of the Adriatic and its coves.

Here are some top family dining tips in the area from our local contributor, Denise Ostuni of Ostuni Ventures: Il Guazzetto - Via Dell'Erba 39/41 (historic center) Price: mid-range. Delicious seafood meals. Call for a reservation to be sure. I recommend the zuppa di pesce, a fish soup casserole, with their artisan beer. El Gato Borracho - Via Mulini, 42 (historic center) tel. 080.748088 Price: low to mid range. They have tables and chairs outdoors during the summer months. Their specialty is paella with Italian ingredients but they serve a variety of local foods from the region as well as great pizzas for kids and adults! Lido Bianco - Via Procaccia, 3, tel. 080 2462030 Price: mid to high range. It is a restaurant along the coast of Monopoli on the lungomare where you can pick your seafood and they prepare it according to your liking. Try their fresh grilled octopus, pasta with vongole, zuppa di pesce, grilled fish and sparkling, dry wine. It can be a bit pricey but worth the splurge.
